Gods...
David Mack is a god. Seriously. The newest issue of Kabuki: The Alchomy came out this week and I just had a chance to read it. Every time I read an issue of that series my brain floats up into the ether and the world just makes more sense. The art (truly one of a kind), the words, the ideas...there is simply nothing like them. I would say that he needs to write a book on philosophy, but then I remember that he already has. Since he wrote Kabuki: Circle of Blood as his college thesis David Mack has been writing a philisophical autobiography. It is fiction, to be sure, but the ideas are so weighty and well disected that they smack of the divine yet the words are simple and direct. The combination of wordplay and pictoral narrative create a substance that is complete. Each would be incoherent on its own (although every panel is a work of art) yet together they are aw inspiring and direct. It takes me about 5 times as long to read any issue of Kabuki as it does most comic books simply because one must (and wants to) study every page for its hidden tales, to take in the flow of idea and metephor, to complete the image and absorb.
Once again...David Mack is a god.
